-Change comes from within
I can give people all the fitness and health tips in the world, but unless you take upon yourself to integrate the habits into your life, it won't happen for you. If I tell people about my weight loss success their immediate reaction is..."OMG HOW DID YOU DO IT!?! CAN YOU HELP ME LOOSE WEIGHT AHH??"
Next I tell them its a lifestyle not a diet, follow the food pyramid, exercise and do things you love. ect ect... I tell people about my zumba and pilates class, my cycling class. Sometimes I even swap numbers. SOMETIMES I even make a date to meet up at the gym the next day or next week. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE ASKED FOR MY ADVICE HAVE ACTUALLY FOLLOWED THROUGH??? zero!
Because afterall, yes that sounds like a great idea- to wear a bikini this summer, to loose 20lbs ect ect...it also sounds like a great idea, to save up $1,000, or to pay off your car this year. BUT UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY MAKE STEPS TOWARD DOING SO IT WON"T HAPPEN!
-The first step is showing up!
If you can, no matter what the weather or how you feel, get your tennis shoes on, get out the door, once your in the gym, the swimming pool, the basketball court, the weight room, the track, the dance studio, however you get your sweat on, the rest is just a matter of making the first move.
EXERCISE LIFTS YOUR MOOD! There is a vast difference between my mood now and last year when I was imoble because of my car accident I didn't not go to the gym and quite frankly didn't strategize ways to go. Somedays I feel like crap, angry, or maybe down I go dance, stretch, swim, cycle whatever...I feel invigorated, inspired, excited, alive...and you will too!!
-It's day by day
Nothing happens overnight. In fact it takes 6 weeks to feel and begin seeing changes! Whether that be feeling stronger, feeling more motivated to exercise, feeling better about eating different kinds of food. Whatever. BUT TIERRA, 6 WEEKS IS A LONG TIME. No its not! Just think with me for a second...what were you doing 6 weeks ago? And what did you think you were going to be doing now...maybe nothing what you actually are doing...but if you make plans day by day, in 6 weeks TRUST you will have made progress!
Make realistic goals!
Don't expect anything miraculous just yet. Don't expect to loose 50lbs by May. Maybe something like 20lbs! Which is enough motivation to keep you going right??
You must wait for A) your tastebuds to adapt to these new foods B) your metabolism to speed up C) have increased energy. About 9 months ago I couldn't imagine eating some of the things I eat now...In fact about 3 weeks ago I couldn't imagine really liking portabella mushrooms...and now their my new favorite veggie (and they speed up your metabolism...when your metabolism is fast you gain weight at a slower rate in other words, your able to maintain weight better than if you have a slower metabolism)
Make a Plan!!
Some people like to dive head first...I suggest a plan. However I'm a virgo and highly organized and detailed....What are you going to do week 1- maybe its go from regular to diet soda, water and green tea....replace ice cream with yogart...replace white bread with wheat...its one thing after the next...
Write down the days and times your going to exercise before the week starts.
REMEMBER- IF YOUR TOO BUSY FOR EXERCISE, YOUR TOO BUSY! It is doctor reccommended to recieve 30-60min of exercise 3-5 days per week. Talk to your boss, change your work, school schedule, get a print off of the gym class, get a buddy, do something!
Cheat A Little! But only a little...
Thats right, you need a cheat to make you realize how much better you feel with eating natural food...Got a date at the movies this weekend, Going clubbing or bowling with friends, Church dinner, Family Reunion, Christmas Party?? Save your splurge for the event, but eat like always the day of before and after event is my rule of thumb. Don't bring any home, don't even think about it... Save the sweets for occasion. Think of junk food as drinking, you don't sit around watch tv and say, "Hey pass the Vodka, pass the Ciroc!" So don't do the same with junk food, it only makes your miserable, junk food has no nutritional value! So cheat when their are weekend events, (Trust me, you won't have more than 2 things each weekend) Throughout the week when people offer you something say no thank you or take a small piece and keep it steppin. You've got goals to reach and can't keep messin around! But cheating on the weekend events is acceptable and neccessary!
Force it first, then it'll come natural...
Sometimes you just have to force yourself to like something before you actually do...
For example I've always hated water, now I can't get enough of it. I remember it high school I fainted during P.E, it was maybe only 87degrees out, when I went to the nurse they said because of lack of water...You would think that would be a sign right? Wrong...I continued to not drink water until early this year. My weight was stagnant..I had finally go to the 140's range weighing in at 148 end of April 2010, I thought all hope was lost... a got in a conversation with a personal trainer at Golds Gym and she said the last few pounds is what you eat. I said hmm well I've got the eating and exercising down pact...scanning around my kitchen one day I thought to myself, what could I be missing, I looked at the faucet and paused- WATER! I was only drinking water at the gym...So from that day on I forced 64oz (about 3 1/2 16.9 oz Disani or Aquafina waters a day) After the 1st week, I thought, this aint so bad, after week 2, It was habitual...after week 3 I was craving water...
So in order to make it happen, take the leap!
Consider Your History!
If you have never eaten a piece of whole grain bread, salad, oatmeal, or real strawberries, your in for a rude awakening when changing your lifestyle. It's going to feel uncomfortable. This is not said to scare you, but to warn you, it's going to really take time and effort. My history..from birth to about 12 I ate candy, fast food, but also enjoyed some healthier foods like yogart, wheat bread, fruit...from 12-17 I ate the 'healthy foods' power bars, fruit cups, oatmeal, eggs, cheese, peanut butter, milk....age 18 I was in college and got influenced by the college food culture- greasy pizza (2 slices at a time) 'real fruit juice', hot chocolate, donuts...(It's pretty discusting now that I think back on it) YUCK!!
But from 19 and til present (I'm 20)...I've turned a new leaf, couldn't imagine going back...If you have made fast food this and that your basic dinner most days, and no 'yogart' from cold stone or dairy queen does not count! Then your in for some real challenges but just know-
IT MAYBE HARD BUT SURELY NOT IMPOSSIBLE!
I came to the conclusion that if people can loose 70, 100 and 200lbs and KEEP IT OFF!?
Surely I can loose my little gut! Trust me, the battle is worth the fight!
Start now! Like, as soon as your done reading this post!
Elongating this process will make it harder. If you start somewhere your more likely to at least keep trying.
Ways to start..
-Food Diary: Write the times of what you ate and how much and what.
-Replace: Sugar for Honey, White bread for wheat bread, Digornis Pizza for Pasta & Veggies or Rice and Veggies (it's not that hard to cook yourself), Fruit Cups for Fresh Fruit, Soda with 100% Fruit Juice and Tea...TEA FROM THE BAG, NOT BOTTLED TEA, and milk. Cookies for Dark Chocolate (70% coca ONLY!!!). (If you've still got sweet treats lurking in your pantry sell it, give it away, give it to the poor, Merry Christmas :) . Promising to nibble off it each day will only increase your temptation. DON'T SURROUND YOURSELF WITH JUNK FOOD AND SWEETS IF YOU DONT HAVE TO!
SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! GO TO MYFOODPYRAMID.GOV, STUDY THE FOOD PYRAMID, RUN TO YOUR NEAREST SHNUCKS OR WHOLE FOOD, BORROW SOME POTS AND PANS, START COOKIN, BUY SOME HOME GYM EQUIPMENT OR SIGN UP FOR THE GYM OR BETTER YET BOTH AND LETS GET TO WORK! I SEE THAT BIKINI BODY SHOWING ALREADY! :)
