Of course, the implication turned out to be somewhat exaggerated. Snopes.com immediately jumped to Obama's defense and called the story "far-fetched:"
"The large Indonesian community resident in Mecca was a medium through which knowledge about Wahhabism reached Indonesia, but the community itself appears to have remained virtually immune to Wahhabi influences."
But Obama was backed into a corner and the Obama Muslim connection was out in the open. While the Insight article may (or may not) have been "far-fetched," it was clear that Obama's statement that he was "never" a Muslim was not accurate. The Obama campaign immediately issued a "clarification" and said that Obama has never been a practicing Muslim. [Emphasis Ours].
But the tap-dancing started long before Insight published the allegation. Daniel Pipes writes:
"Then, on Dec. 22, in the unlikely setting of the Smoky Row Coffee Shop in Oskaloosa, Iowa, as he munched on pumpkin pie and drank tea with four locals, Obama provided more detail took on this topic than before. When asked to explain his Muslim heritage, he replied: 'My father was from Kenya, and a lot of people in his village were Muslim. He didn't practice Islam. Truth is he wasn't very religious. He met my mother. My mother was a Christian from Kansas, and they married and then divorced. I was raised by my mother. So, I've always been a Christian. The only connection I've had to Islam is that my grandfather on my father's side came from that country. But I've never practiced Islam. … For a while, I lived in Indonesia because my mother was teaching there. And that's a Muslim country. And I went to school. But I didn't practice. But what I do think it does is it gives me insight into how these folks think, and part of how I think we can create a better relationship with the Middle East and that would help make us safer is if we can understand how they think about issues.'"
But others have a different view of the Obama-Muslim connection. Obama's half-brother, Malik Obama, in an interview with Israeli Radio stated that Obama "could be a good President for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background."
Haroon Siddiqui, a reporter with the Toronto Star, paid a visit to Obama's Indonesian school and claimed that at least "three of his [Obama's] teachers have said he was enrolled as a Muslim."
One of Obama's childhood friends, Zulfin Adi says that Obama "was Muslim. He went to the Mosque. I remember him wearing a sarong."
Obama's own sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng says, "my whole family was Muslim."
And Obama himself once described the Muslim call to prayer as "one of the prettiest sounds on earth at sunset."
"Never been a practicing Muslim"... "Was not raised as a Muslim"? Obviously, the statements are false.
Of course, some will ask why should it all matter? The answer, of course, is obvious, it all goes back to the issues of character and trustworthiness.
If Obama is willing to "nuance" his own heritage... his own upbringing... can we really trust anything he says?
Floyd Brown, in his novel, Obama Unmasked, puts the episode in perspective: " [B]y adding the word "practicing" Obama climbed onto the slippery slope of modern politics, calling into question the truthfulness of everything he says... causing people to wonder if Obama is truly the fresh voice of 'new politics' he claims to be."

It may have been a hard existence but we shouldn't assume this in all cases. There's a good chance that, in some parts of the world at least, food was abundant and readily available.

Paleo, as I mentioned in the intro, is short for Paleolithic. It refers to the period very roughly 750,000 years ago up to about 15,000 years ago during which humans first began to make chipped-stone tools. The idea behind the so-called Paleo Diet is that we should eat the kind of foodstuffs that humans from that historical period ate. The reasoning behind this is that we have not yet evolved away from the adaption to the kinds of food they ate back then. 15,000 years really isn't long in evolutionary terms and it would be a big ask for humans to have been able to adapt completely to our very different modern diet within that time.
Sugar and Starch
If you think about human diet in the terms and over the timescales I've mentioned above you'll begin to see that large quantities of carbohydrate-rich food, containing lots of sugar and starch, are a recent addition. Perhaps it's the case, as advocates of low-carb and Paleo-type diets claim, that our bodies are just not adapted to deal with all this stodge. We assume that our ancestors didn't suffer greatly from problems of obesity because they had little food to eat and spent most of their time running about chasing it. But maybe that's just not true. In the places where food was readily available our ancestors may have led relatively sedentary lives. Maybe they didn't become obese because they were living on a diet to which they were properly and fully adapted.
What if we are now seeing the terrible consequences of this great dietary change in our modern epidemics of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and even cancer?
Facing Up & Losing Weight
Perhaps it's time to face up to the idea that our modern diet is nutritionally lacking. We assume that it's healthy for us to eat foodstuffs like bread and pasta because that's what we have been told for the last 40 or 50 years. But the research behind human diet is really in its infancy, so it's way too early to claim that we have all the answers.
Personally I would rather trust a diet that humans lived on for hundred of thousands of years than one they have lived on for perhaps just a couple of centuries. Maybe I'm just lucky in that I really love the kinds of foods you can eat on low-carb and Paleo diets. I know from around 8 years of personal experience that, when I switch back to a carbohydrate-heavy diet, my weight increases very rapidly. I can lose the weight again quickly when I switch back to Paleo. This isn't scientific evidence but it works for me.
I'm also lucky that I live right by the sea. I can go down to the beach, get some clams, cook them up, eat them, then throw the shells back down on the shore. I'm making my own little Paleolithic shell midden down there!

Which, if you think about it, probably will improve your sex life too! You've heard us say before to eat your fruits and veggies, and the fact of the matter is that they are an outstanding source of energy. So chomp on some carrots when you get the mid-afternoon sleepies, and don't forget that you are an example to your family. When your kids see you eating fruits and veggies, they will do the same.
Tip #2 for improving your energy level is to eat breakfast everyday. When you skip breakfast, you don't lose weight, I promise. You slow down your metabolism by trying to preserve energy. Breakfast absolutely helps you get a jump start on your day. What to eat for breakfast you ask? Oatmeal is always a great option. It's great for your heart, cleans the blood, and gives you fiber. Try it with some berries if you need a little sweetness, skip the sugar and cinnamon. Yogurt with low-fat granola and berries is yummy, and you can even get that at McDonalds!
Tip #3- water, water, water. Drink half of your weight in ounces every day. A little dehydration can slow you down! While on the subject of drinks, try to cut out caffeine. You all know Diet Coke is my poison of choice, so it's hard for me to preach about this one. Here's what some experts say on the topic "...caffeine and sweets are fake energy, they will give you a temporary boost in energy followed by an inevitable crash. These stimulants can cause insomnia, anxiety and lead to some diseases." While I do drink a lot of Diet Coke, I try to drink just as much water each day.

Always have fresh fruits and veggies in your fridge and keep the soda far away, like in the basement so you'll have to walk a long way to get one when it might just be easier to get a glass of water.
