Obama Identity: A Fictional Tale Of Reality

Dieting Foods - Brown Rice

For many people, white rice is a diet staple. But, if you’ll buck tradition a little and replace white rice in your diet with brown rice, you may find that it’s easier to lose weight, and to feel full while dieting.

Brown rice is the exact same thing as white rice; it is just processed a bit differently. Brown rice is unmilled or only partly milled, as compared to white rice which is very milled and processed.

Sweet Potatoes the Perfect Dieting Food

Sweet potatoes have one additional added benefit over many other traditional high fiber diet foods: their sweet taste. Sweet potatoes can be a very satisfying food for the dieter who has worked to eliminate sweets from their diet.

Converting Children to Healthy Eating Lifestyle

Pictures:
Print out pictures of the food pyramid, fruits, veggies ect and hang them around the kitchen. Make sure they are colorful enough to attract a kids' eyes!
TRY myfoodpyramid.gov for pictures of food pyramids and other kid friendly nutrition & exercise photos

Give them the Facts:
If you have a boy they maybe stubborn to the importance of nutrition yet love the idea of exercise. Tell your boys: Good nutrition gives you better energy to perform in sports.

Throw away the junk:
Thats right! Keeping junk food around the house will make everyone crave it more. Maybe keep a few pieces of dark chocolate or peanut butter around the house. Tell your kids sugar will not fill you up. Sugar will make you more hungry and want more sugar! Sugar can also help promote acne. Ewww!

Cheat a little:
That's right! Have your cheat day. After the boy's saturday football game, go to Whole Foods for some Pizza, go to Froyo for Ice Cream or Frozen yogart.

Pack healthy and cute snacks:
Pack lunches that look more attractive than nutritious. Try packing a peanut butter sandwhich on whole wheat bread, mixed fruit, mixed veggies and spinach dip, homemade spinach/shrimp pizza, blend up a fruit smoothie made from real fruit. Be creative. This also keeps down suspicious questions at the lunch table. Keep it colorful, bright, healthy and fun!

Get the family to help with cooking:
When you cook your meat, veggetables or whatever for the week. Have the kids pass you the Olive Oil, or Honey, or season the meat, or peel the oranges. Get the kids involved, put them to work, and cut your cooking time in half. Then give them a $1 raise on allowance! :D

Why your not loosing weight…

Why your not loosing weight…

Consuming Too Many Calories

-Calories is energy. You need a specific amount of energy per day depending on your body, age and calories burned throughout the day. Women should generally eat 1,700 calories per day. Smaller women cosume 1,600 calories per day. If you eat too many calories, those access calories will turn into fat. People get caught up in the “health food”, whole grain this and that. Watch your calories too!

Consuming Too Few Calories

-Consuming too few calories can backfire. If you consume don’t keep tabs of calories and consume too few of them, you may eat way too much at one time of the day. Eating too much at once causes weight gain. It’s always important to keep tabs of calories throughout the day. Even if you have to write them down to get into this habbit. Or make a tally mid day. This is important.

Not Exercising

-IT’S TRUE! Weight loss is 70-80% of what you eat. BUT exercise is a big help. It is doctor recommended that people receive 3-5days, 30-60minutes of exercise. However, for weight loss you may want to do more than this average. Also when you weight train and gain muscle, muscles burn calories at a higher rate than fat. This will double your rate of weight loss. When eating and exercising habits are inline, you can expect to loose 1-2.5 lbs p.wk. You cannot loose weight by eating alone!

Not ENOUGH Exercise

-Just because you went to the gym doesn’t mean you exercised. Standing in a garden doesn’t make you a flower, standing in the garage doesn’t make you a car. The most frustrating thing is, while I’m sweating bullets jumping rope, the lady next to me does 10 crunches then leaves. You must sweat to get a workout. Look at the numbers on the machine, wear a watch, or determine calories burned by looking up exercises. Activities done for 1hr such as Zumba, Boxing, Cycling and Step Aerobics burn 500-700 calories. Running or Swimming vigorously 30 minutes can burn up to 300 calories. Don’t just assume, research and go by the numbers. Weight loss is not magic, there is a science behind it.

Too Much Sugar

-Yes, Special K, Oatmeal, Fiber One Bars, and Dark Chocolate that is 70% cocoa is good for you! BUT eating all of these in one day is a little bit too much. Just because its healthy, doesn’t mean you should eat it, at least not today. My rule of thumb is to only eat 1-2 sweet things p.day. In addition to this I also drink 1-2 medium sized cups of green tea sweetened with just under a tablespoon of honey. So a piece of dark chocolate and serving of cereal. Balance is key!

Blowing It On The Weekends

It is important to treat yourself with a snack or two one day of the week. Or two small snacks two days of the week or weekend. Some people take it too far by negating all nutrition on Saturday and Sunday and gain the 2lbs they lost during the week all back. My rule of thumb for myself is one snack on Saturday. Or a small snack Friday and Saturday. Don’t stock up on junk food. Wait until that birthday party, movie night or wedding for your cheat day!

Your Not Drinking Water

This was the last thing I had to fix in order to knock of those last few pounds. I only wanted to loose another 8lbs, but actually lost another 18lbs!! All by drinking 64oz of water p.day. The first 2 weeks I forced water down. I used to hate water. By week 3 and 4 I started becoming thirstier for it. I was loosing 1-1.5 lbs p.wk by drinking 64oz of water a day. I already had the eating and exercising down, water was the last missing thing. Carry around a water or sports bottle, get a purifier, always carry water with you. Anyone can make this a habit!

Learn About Nutrition & Fitness to Loose Weight

Learn About Nutrition & Fitness to Loose Weight

When I first began my weight loss journey my first attempts were in March 2009, I went to the doctor around that time and weighed in at 162lbs 5’4. I felt that I had let myself go and missed the smaller figure I once had my high school days. One day my roommate and I decided to go to schnucks and pick up some veggies and a bunch of ‘health food’. I began running 30 minutes 3x’s a week. This trend didn’t last long. Over the summer I was in charge of catering food for a film and bought nothing nutritious. However my healthy attempt was slim fast with some food for breakfast, and an apple or piece of fruit a day. In August I kicked it into high gear with more time at the gym. Around November and December I started researching about weight loss, ab workouts, weight training, how much cardio p.wk, healthy snack ideas ect. These google searches I began about a year ago is the foundation for my nutrition and fitness knowledge today.

Around March and April 2010 I became REALLY interested in nutrition and started to dig deep. I discovered the benefits of several foods. Broccoli raises metabolism and helps cures many cancers. Grapes and blueberries are good for your skin. Fish, chicken, eggs, and nuts are a great source of protein. It’s best to eat a carbohydrate rich meal before a workout. Bananas are good to eat after a workout. My biggest discovery was myfoodpyramid.gov which is a very detailed and organized breakdown of the food pyramid and foods within each group. Sometime in the summer of 2010 I began this blog. I was so excited about the nutrition and fitness knowledge I had, and wanted to share with the whole world. In addition to this, my lifestyle became easier as I found more benefits of healthy eating. I came to the conclusion- “When you focus on nutrition rather than “dieting” and loosing weight, the journey is easier. Focus on facts and nutrition, the weight will follow!”

Alert! Parasites Can Make You Fat!

Believe it or not, parasites are a major hidden source of weight gain. Here's how to get rid of them.

Fish or meat that's raw, rare or cooked in the microwave isn't exposed to the high heat needed to kill parasites like protozoa an worms.

Once in the gut, these organisms absorb the nutrients needed to keep blood sugar balanced and energy high. And this often results in sugar cravings and chronic fatigue. Plus, they send biochemical signals to the digestive tract that the body registers as hunger, causing overeating.

To get rid of parasites, try an annual cleanse with parasite-killing herbs like black walnut and garlic. Two liquid extracts with proven herbs: Uni Key Verma Plus (a worm remover) and Uni Key Para Plus (a protozoa eliminator).

Outsmart Cravings with this Color!

This hue suppresses appetite and stress-related snacking, according to a study at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore.

Keep your sweet tooth from striking before bedtime by putting on pink pajamas after dinner.

Color therapists say the electromagnetic frequency of pink prompts the brain's pineal gland to release serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps nix nibble.

How Much Protein, Carbs and Fat We Need Each Day

We've all heard the term a “balanced diet”. But we may not know exactly how to ensure that our diets are truly balanced.

Getting your diet in balance means getting the right amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat per day to meet your body’s needs.

Dieting Foods - Wholegrain Foods

For years, people thought of all wheat and grain based products as virtually the same. No one really thought of white bread as being less healthy than whole wheat bread.

But, today we understand that eating highly refined carbohydrates is lousy for our bodies, especially if we’re trying to lose weight. One of the simplest things you can do to help speed up weight loss is switch to all whole grains.

Dieting Foods - Wholegrain Foods

Dieting Foods - The Grapefruit

But, grapefruit goes even further – and can help reduce body fat, too, it seems. Recent studies have concluded that grapefruit helps control insulin, which we know contributes to weight loss.

You see, fat can only be stored in the body when insulin is present. Insulin is secreted in response to elevated blood sugar levels. Grapefruit helps stabilize blood sugar, which keeps insulin in check.

Outsmart Stress Eating with this Dish Switch!

With all that's on your figurative plate, it's easy to scarf down everything on your literal one without a thought.

To slow down, swap circular dishes of square ones.

According to feng shui practitioners, circles stimulate mental chatter that prevents you from focusing on your food.

But squares inspire ken gua, or self-awareness. Cultivating this quality allows you to tune in to your body's satiety signals, so you stop eating when you're full.

Lose Weight Without Trying!

It doesn't require hours of toiling away at the gym to get the benefits of exercise. In fact, all it takes is clipping on a pedometer:

Studies at California's Lindora Medical Clinic found that those who used a pedometer lost 60% more weight than nonwearers.

These gadgets provide immediate feedback and incentive to take more calorie-burning steps each day, says integrative medicine specialist Hyla Cass, M.D.

The Importance of Planning For Best Nutrition and Fitness Success

Planning will either make or break your nutrition or fitness habits! When I began my journey I had an e-food diary, and e-gym schedule for the week. I began this over year ago to start good habits. Today I make a mental tally of calories about twice a day. Sometimes I’ll take a few seconds to whip out my phone calculator to see approximately how many calories I’ve eaten, and approximately how many more calories I can eat, and what food groups I have eaten from. I also write a weekly gym schedule. I pencil in 2-3 hrs of cardio, 1 hr heavy weight class, 3-4 30min core sessions, and 2-3 hrs of conditioning for the body. It is this combination that works for me, my body type, and my desired look. Many people may look at me and think that keeping my body and health in tact is a very hard thing to do. Not necessarily. Initially this was challenging. Today it’s a breeze honestly. The main setbacks are time and money. You can make time, and you can grocery shop for healthy itmes even with a small budget! You can have the abs, the shoulders, and legs! IT ALL TAKES PLANNING! Nothing happens over night or in mid-air. And although the word planning seems cumbersome to some people, It’s only something to set you up for a lifestyle permanent change. Just think, when you first began that new job, first had your kid, or first made that thanksgiving meal, you had to plan, write it down! But now you’re a pro! And although everyday will be different and bring about different challenges, you’ll be more prepared if you plan for them. SO TIERRA, WHAT ARE WAYS YOU PLAN IN ADVANCE TO KEEP YOUR HEALTH AND BODY IN CHECK??

(Glad you asked!)

Scenario 1-

I haven’t eaten vegetables today, I’m stuck at a meeting that doesn’t let out until 8pm, and I have to wake up early for class, or work the next morning.

SOLUTION

*While McDonalds maybe the first thing that comes to mind for some, have you ever considered getting a Shnucks salad on the go? Sure you have to actually walk in and make it instead of a drive through, but, if you can’t walk into a store, how lazy is that?? Just saying. So this would be my simple solution to this complicated scenario.

Scenario 2-

I’ve only got one day of cardio in, it’s Saturday night, and all the gym classes are done. I don’t want to do a treadmill or machine

SOLUTION

*First of all, the world will not come to an end if your regimen is thrown off one week. Try again next week and you’ll be good. But my solution to this scenario- do an outdoor run or ride your bike Sunday morning. Lots of people will be out! (Provided it’s not winter) If it’s winter make sure you are stocked up on workout DVD’s for emergencies like this one!

Scenario 3-

I’m moving into a new house and our oven won’t be fixed for a few days!

SOLUTION

There are plenty healthy options that do not require a microwave. While fruit, whole grains such as cereal, bread, crackers, nuts and seeds will be easy; vegetables can be a hassle without an oven, right? WRONG

No Oven Required! Veggie Dishes

*Cucumber Salad: Sliced Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Seasoned with Apple Cider, Vinegar, Salt and Pepper

*Giant Green Vegetables: Find them in the frozen vegetable aisle in Schucks. Many come with sauce. Follow the directions on the back and enjoy!

*Shuncks Salad

OTHER

*Deli Sandwiches: (Self explanatory). This is a great way to get some whole grains and protein!

*Baked Potatoes: Cut it in the center, season with salt, pepper, sprinkle shredded cheese, microwave for 7-8min, maybe add sour cream sauce!

*Peanut Butter Pita: Spread a serving of peanut butter and a little of honey on pita bread. Fold bread in half, and then fold in half again. Heat for 25 seconds. Let cool. What a great midnight snack!

*Crab Spread or Tuna & Wheat Crackers

*Whole Grain Chips & Salsa

*Shnucks Pre-Boiled Eggs

Typical Exercise Week Regimen

Monday

1hr Cardio (Evening)

1hr Conditioning (Evening)

Tuesday

30min Core (Evening)

1 15min Cardio (Evening)

Wednesday

30min Core

1hr Weights

Thursday

1hr Conditioning (Pilates) (Morning)

1hr Cardio (Evening)

Saturday

30min Core (Morning)

1hr Conditioning (Power Yoga) (Morning)

*When I do core exercises I hold planks and 5-8 lbs. I spend 20 min on my abs and 10min on my back. I spend about 5-7 minutes on each section- (lower rectos abdominals, middle abdominals & obliques). I consider my core exercise as strength because I hold weights for half of my abdominal moves, which works into my shoulders.

*Conditioning is key to having a long lean body. I recommend 2-3 times of conditioning per week for best results. Conditioning exercises include yoga, Pilates, and Thai chi.

*Each week I’ll switch it up. One week I may focus on cardio by doing 3 days, the next week I may focus on using the resistance training opposed to weights and use the resistance band instead of dumbbells, bars and kettle bells. One week I may try the stair stepper as half my cardio. One week I may try doing an extra day of stretching for a 4th hour of conditioning to improve flexibility. Switch it up, do something different every week and you’ll never get bored.

REMEMBER: There is a science to achieving a great body, figure out your perfect formula!

Health and Fitness Myths I HATE TO HEAR!!

I want to loose weight, I need to go to the gym.

TRUE AND FALSE.

Weight loss is 70-80% of your food intake. Its about what you eat, and how much at a time. And balancing. Although it is doctor reccommended to get 3-5 days 30-60min of exercise. Exercise is to change the look of your body. (Which requires more than 30-60min). You can loose weight by changing what you eat BUT it is doctor reccomended to exercise.

2. I ate a Salad thats my vegetable.

TRUE AND FALSE

Salads are a great way of getting in vegetable. However it is not when you coat it with tons of fattning dressing, crutons, and multiple ingredients at a time. My rule of thumb for salads is 4-5 ingredients.... 1- cheese, 2-meat or fish, 3- crackers, bread crumbs or crutons, 4- vegetable 5-dressing.

3. I need to do cardio everyday to loose weight!

FALSE

No. You need 3 things- CARDIO, STRENGTH, AND CONDITIONING to get a strong, lean and fit body. Cardio is to burn the fat, strength is to give you strong muscles, conditioning is to stretch, lengthen and repair your muscles. If you want the michelle obama arms lift weights, do power yoga, if you want the long lean look, try thai chi. You want to get your heart pumping and loose that extra 5lbs, do cardio. An even balance between the 3 will get you going.

Personally I do 2-3 hrs of each
My typical exercise schedule

-3 hrs of Cardio (Zumba- Mon, Tue and Sat)

-2 hrs of Conditioning (Pilates- Mon and Thursday)

-2 1/2-3 hrs of Strength- (1hr Weight Class- Wed, Weighted Core on the Gym Floor (30 min)- Tue, Wed, Thur, Sat)

This gives you a guideline for mapping out your exercise weeks.
