Most weekend press coverage of developments in Egypt suggested that what was happening in the streets was comparable to the overthrow of communism in Russia and Eastern Europe. Former GOP House Majority Leader Dick Armey even suggested the mob in Cairo was the Egyptian version of our Tea Party. It's time for a reality check. Like most Americans, I hope that the people of Egypt and throughout the Middle East can soon live in free societies that respect the right to dissent, freedom of religion, freedom to assemble, free elections and so on. Unfortunately, the history of the Middle East suggests that authoritarian regimes are seldom replaced by democracies. Rather, they are typically replaced by Islamic dictatorships that, besides being hostile to the U.S., are even more oppressive.
